Rawalakot is located in the Pir Panjal Range. It’s a township in District Poonch. This area is also known as “Pearl Valley” because the excess of almond blossoms in the valley gives an impression of pearls when seen from a mountain in summers. This area has one of the highest literacy rates in South Asia.

Climate

Rawalakot is at an elevation of 1638 meters above sea level. Because of its high altitude, the area has a highland climate. Rawalakot is one of the most beautiful valleys of Jammu & Kashmir which is located 80Km away from Rawalpindi & Islamabad. The climate of Rawalakot has all four seasons spring, summer, autumn & winter. Rawalakot has cold & snowy weather during winter, humid during summer and mild & warm during spring & autumn.

Communication

All major cellular companies (Ufone, Mobilink, Warid, Telenor, and SCOM) are operating in the area. A local FM radio station named Voice of Kashmir is also functioning in Rawalakot. Television systems are available in the area which carries Pakistani & International programs. Broadband internet access is also provided there from ADSL.

Education

You can find many well equipped and developed educational institutions in Rawalakot which includes the Agriculture University of Azad Kashmir, The University of Poonch Rawalakot, Poonch Medical College, Govt. College for men & women, several Higher Secondary and private Schools. Most of the colleges were demolished after the earthquake of October 08, 2005, but they have rebuilt now.

Culture

In Rawalakot mostly “Sudhans” people are living here. They have migrated to Poonch District of Kashmir region a few centuries ago. The city’s surroundings are very beautiful and peaceful.

Banjosa and Toli Peer are two famous tourists’ destinations in this area. Many tourist attraction places are also available here including Mountain based adventure tourism, Rock climbing, Paragliding, water-based adventure Tourism, summer camping, Hiking, and mountaineering.
